It's a three-way tie

May 20 '00

The Dark Tower Series by Stephen King (more in the fantasy category than Sci-fi, but close enough), Ender's Game series by Orson Scott Card, and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series by Douglas Adams.

I'll keep this somewhat short because I've already written a review (albeit a brief one) about the Dark Tower Series and about Ender's Game, and I am planning to write in-depth reviews of all of the books as soon as I finish reading them for the 5th time...I'm also planning to write a review about the first "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" eventually...

Anyhow, without further ado, why:

The Dark Tower Series by Stephen King is unlike any of his other works (save The Eyes of the Dragon). It is an epic, and I do mean epic of monumental proportions. He's written 4 novels so far continuing the storyline, and he keeps telling us there are at least 3 more to come, and even then he might not finish the story.

If he didn't finish that story, I think I might go mad...it's been long enough since the last book as it is. The basic plot revolves around The Gunslinger (which is also the title of the first book in the series), who is the last of his kind, in a world that is strangely familiar to ours but is not. He is searching after the Wizard, and ultimately the Dark Tower, to help his world (it seems to be dying). The Drawing of the Three, The Wastelands, and Wizard and Glass are the continuances of the story thus far....

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams is a cult classic. It is the Princess Bride of books. After reading all five books in this trilogy (yes, Adams claims it's still a trilogy, which only adds to the cult classic-ness of the series), you will finally understand why people keep telling you that the answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything (which is also the title of the 2nd book) is 42.
The storyline revolves around Ford Prefect, who is an alien who has been living on Earth the past 15 years, and Arthur Dent, a Brit who unwillingly gets thrown into the mess when Ford saves him (right before Earth gets annihilated to make way for a new interstellar highway). The movie does not do the first book justice (so don't go watch the movie, because it really does suck). The other books in the series besides the 2 already mentioned are: So Long, and Thanks for all the Fish, Mostly Harmless, and The Restaurant at the End of the Universe in no particular order.

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card is the first book in a series of four, and parallel to another which will turn into it's own series (Ender's Shadow). The unfortunate thing about this series is that the final 2 books, Xenocide, and Children of the Mind are not on a level achieved by Ender's Game and it's immediate sequel Speaker for the Dead. But they all have some very important lessons and ideas about children and war.

The first book is all about Ender (and his siblings), who as a child is sent off through training to save the world against an alien invasion. The plot is way more than that brief nutshell, and much too complicated to try and explain...and the sequel(s) deal with Ender's life beyond his heroic childhood. Ender's Shadow deals with one of Ender's friends, Bean, and his parallel experiences in the Battle School. At times the two novels overlap, which is very cool indeed.

Well, this editorial has gone on long enough...and now you know why I think these series all tie for the best. Happy reading, and if you ever have any questions about any of these books, please do not hesitate to shoot me an e-mail.
