Essential Reading

Written: Aug 08 '00
Pros:great style, great thought process, easy for everyone to understand and learn from
Cons:most good books are $10, and I'm a poor college student.

Think about what's most important in your life. Try thinking about the meaning of life. Try grasping that abstract concept that has eluded you for ages; that same concept that usually just throws your brain into a confused spiral. I've got a few ideas that used to do it for me, and then I read some of C.S. Lewis' writings.
Ranging from short stories to a series of fantasy novels, C.S. Lewis is one of the greatest authors of the century. There are a few key characteristics of Lewis' writing that make me say that, and I'm sure that if you've taken the time to sit down and read his work, you will agree.
First of all, he uses a colloquial style that makes his writing enjoyable, even engaging. You feel as though you're having more of a conversation with him than reading one of his books. This style of writing has one main effect on me: I remember it. I find myself thinking about what I've read through the remainder of the day, even week, even several years.
Secondly, every argument he maintains, is built on logic. He progresses through a series of thoughts in a clear and sensable way which makes his ideas entirely believable. In the past people (like me) have had a hard time thinking about God and religion and other topics that seem so abstract and seem to have no empirical evidence. C.S. Lewis reveals proof for his beliefs on such issues. He is a great mediator between science and religion.
Third of all, C.S. Lewis writes books about topics that matter. Now I enjoy reading a John Grisham or Tom Clancy book as much as the next reader. But what impresses me about C.S. Lewis, is he approaches issues head on. He makes it clear what he believes and he will defend it. He is not out to please, or to entertain, or to win peoples' votes. His writing is honest and complete.
Now it should be noted that different works accomplish different things. Mere Christianity, for instance, is an excellent book. However, C.S. Lewis focuses less on his personal beliefs, and promotes the common ideas which are accepted to be the basics of Christian belief. This book is popular reading among Lewis fans, as is the Abolition of Man, The Great Divorce, The Screwtape Letters, and the children's series, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. I don't have time to explain each book, but I can honestly recommend each and any of his works.
C.S. Lewis is an interesting man, with a very interesting history. His beliefs have been tested and formed through trials of faith. And he has much experience as a former aethiest. He wrote with several other incredible writers who have all left significant marks on the literary world. I not only recommend writings of C.S. Lewis, but writings about C.S. Lewis.
All in all, I think that anyone who reads C.S. Lewis with an open mind will be amazed by his talent as a writer, but also his depth as a thinker. He knows man well, he knows God well, and he knows what he writes about well. And his message is always a message of inspiration and hope. I wish there were more writers today with the qualities of C.S. Lewis.
