| jiastar's Full Review: Sister Moon Lodge: The Power & Mystery of Menstrua... |
I can hear you all groaning from here at my Epinion title, I couldn't help myself.
"Sister Moon Lodge" is a 300+ page exploration of menstruation from the perspective that a woman's "moon-time" is a sacred time of personal power. It discusses everything from how to acknowledge a young woman's first period to how to look a "hot flashes" in a positive way.
It is divided into 3 sections which are for: she who has not yet menstruated, or is new to it; she who has a monthly cycle, and she who is no longer having their menses. Filled with useful information, personal stories, meditations, songs and chants this book will help a young woman have a positive view of their period or help an older woman change her perception of that "time of the month"
Ms. Stepanich discusses the biological basics of the menstrual cycle, how to make ones own washable sanitary napkins (which are both better for the body and the environment), how the moon can affect woman's cycle, how to tune in to the subtle signals your body gives at different times during the month, and more.
However be advised. This is not a technical or medical book. Nor is it a book intended for young adults alone.
Ms. Stepanich is a follower of a Goddess oriented religion known as Wicca. This spirituality is liberally strewn throughout the pages of this book. If you are a follower of another faith and intend this book for your teenager I would advise reading it first yourself.
And even if you are already comfortable with Pagan theology or a practitioner yourself you may want to browse this book before purchasing it or giving it as a gift. Kisma is comfortable enough with her own bleeding to use this flow as well.... plant food.... and this attitude may not be inline with what you feel or believe. I know that this is not something I personally want to do.
All that being said, what I like most about this book is that it does put a positive spin on something that many women feel disgust over. As a Wiccan myself I enjoyed how Kisma made connections between a woman's cycle and the Goddess. This book helped me change my attitude toward my moontime, and I hope will assist me in sparing my daughters any shame associated with their own periods.
