Darkover, By Marrion Zimmer Bradley

The Darkover Series, an offering by Marrion Zimmer Bradley, was one of my favorite while growing up. There are several novels and even several anthologies in this series. This series takes place on a world where the technology level is, for the most part, round about a dark ages level. The basis for this story is the interaction between the technologically advanced Earth culture with the less advanced Darkover's culture. Earth's exploration maintained hidden bases and sent out field agents to explore the culture of Darkover. How these agents got by in the culture, how they fit in and how they learned that there was much to say for a much more simple life was very interesting.
Darkover did not allow by law many things. It dealt with the gender relationships, the premise of equality between the sexes, as well as the debate over if more technology was better or worse. All of this was done in a well woven tapestry of of the novels. The characters were so well developed that by the time the seventh or eighth book is read you feel as if you know them. They feel like old friends you are visiting again to see how they are doing. The culture has a believable feel to it that many "alien" cultures in other offerings in this genre lack.
There were many a night as a young person I would stay up all night and not even realize I had done so, reading these wonderful books. I strongly recommend that if you can find them, you pick them up and read them. Each novel is capable of standing on its own but is so much more enjoyable if read as part of the whole. This series is still a favorite of mine and yes, often are the times that I will pick up one of the books and read it again - for what must be about the 100th time.
