The lessons of the year 2000Dec 31 '00 Write an essay on this topic. At the close of this very interesting and oftentimes chaotic year, it is important to remember some of its events, so we might learn from them. To begin, NEVER again believe that votes don't mean a lot. The Presidential circus in Florida illustrates only too well the inaccuracy of this. For only the second time in the history of this country, we have a President who WAS NOT popularly elected. This should be a wake-up call to those who don't vote, and for the complete and total overhauling of the methods by which we the American people select candidates. Also, the Y2K hysteria we witnessed at the end of 1999 shows how people can panic over nothing. We survived, there was no breakdown of services or panic in the streets. All of that hysteria should be an object lesson in not believing everything you hear, whether from your best friend, or the news media. On the subject of the national news media, I think they have learned only too well the fallacy of their practice of trying to call elections before all the votes are in. Perhaps this will prompt a little more responsibility on their part, rather than engaging in nonsensical speculation without benefit of sound evidence to back their claims. History can be a good teacher, if we its students are willing to learn from it and avoid making the same mistakes we have made in the past. This is my wish for the new millenium, that all of the mistakes made in the year 200 are rectified and not repeated in the coming years. |
