From the moment I picked up my first V.C. Andrews book, Flowers In the Attic, I became an avid V.C. Andrews fan. I received my first book by her when I was around 13. For my 14th birthday I had my mother take me to the bookstore and buy me over $100 worth of her books--every single book she had published. What could not be found at that moment was ordered so that my set would be complete. It did not take me long to read every single book that had been bought for me. Soon I had read each two, three or even four times a piece. Anyone who takes a look at my collection of books will see that the edges are well worn.
V.C. Andrews puts out series of books--each series is about an unbelievably twisted family. So twisted, so unbelievable, yet so compelling, that if you read one book in the series you must read the entire thing. Each series contains two to three generations of the family, with each generation the plot thickens. And, the best part about each series is that after you read the last book, she releases a new book--the very beginning of the story line. Each time I finish a series I am almost sad to no longer be able to read about the lives of the families--they become so real to you, yet they are nothing but words on a piece of paper finely constructed by an exceptional author.
Her writing does usually include somewhat graphic sexual scenes, but I do not mind because it is part of the story--it is the way she makes you feel the character's fear, pain and pleasure. The lady at the bookstore cautiously asked my mother if she knew what I had been reading for that reason. So one day my mother picked up one of my books and started reading, and immediately she became hooked!
V.C. Andrews had true talent for writing fictional stories, and I am very saddened by the fact that she is dead and therefore no longer able to continue writing. Her family on the other hand has continued to publish books in her name, using her format. They are not quite the same, but they are a comfort to have. But for anyone who has not read a V.C. Andrews book, I strongly recommend that you do so. There is a great collection available for anyone who falls into the wrath of her writing.
And I can almost guarantee that if you read one of her books you will become instantly hooked!
