I read it years ago, but I remember it poorly. Winesburg, Ohio, everywhere and everyman. Fabulomunodo to coin a phrase or perhaps to paraphrase. Sherwood Anderson is just my speed or at least can be. This book is absolutely splendid and boring. It's filled with little keyhole stories about the people that live next door to you. You know the neighbor that brings the trash out, the one that you later found out had a son that sadly could no longer bear the eyefulls of hate or the screams, and one day turned the little light off for good. Perhaps I've gone too far. Pastoral, bittersweet, I remember my grandfathers hands, carpenters hands, huge slabs of meat with fingers, history poured out of them, a life time is every hug and smile. Sherwood has them all, and you get the sense that there is more to tell and less. So much like life. I turn the page and read, and there is my aunt or me, or another me that I imagined once, and he lives on, sometimes poking his little fuzzy head out to say hello. Mr. Anderson has captured a lovely bit of humanity here, in a little book about people and their lives. No need to get into the bits and pieces, I can't remember them anyway, suffice it to say, that I found it reassuring to know that I was not the only one who was more than a face and voice and sex drive and past and a future and love loser and time waster and memory hoarder. Ahh...sweet, sweet life, that's what it was about to me. Alas, my commentary here is insufficient to push a purchase, but I would recommend it nonetheless....it's a short trip, and you have nothing to loose.
