Cooking Abbreviations, Substitutions, Equivalants, and Know How
by BeeCharmer | Jun 30 '00
We each get our cooking inspirations from a variety of sources, and there are many things to know when preparing a recipe we have either read about or been given by a family member, neighbor, co-worker, etc. What do you do when you don’t exactly have...

Comprehensive, but perhaps time not well spent... (Reply to this comment)

While it is clear you put alot of time and effort into this opinion, it seems to me that most of this stuff can be found in the back of a basic cookbook. This would only seem useful for someone who doesn't have a cookbook. Nonetheless, I'm sure someone out there will find your info useful.

I am printing out all your helpful tips right now. I thought I knew everything, but a cup of eggs is 12-14 yolks? Wow...I'm impressed with you and your grandma :-)

My kitchen will be the saner for your review.

Thank you for the feedback, and your kind comment. My Grandmother is a gem, and her help and advice through the years has been indispensable! Glad to find that it has been so well received by others here on the site as well.

I started off leaving a comment as to how this is a "must" print-out for the person setting out on their own for the first time... but guess what? I just ran off a copy for myself, too...

Wonderful article; great idea!

Arrogant Moi! (Reply to this comment)

I started off reading this review thinking, "Isn't it nice that BeeCharmer put this guide for new cooks online?" As I read more, I shook my head in agreement thinking, "This is great! I should print this out for the newbies!" Then, I started finding things I did not know and printed it out for me!

Thanks for the this truly detailed, most informative, extremely helpful and beautifully formatted guide for ALL cooks.

Outstanding Review!

Alex,

I moved here in 1998, and am still trying to adapt. The winters alone are like nothing I have ever experienced before! Wa State is truly one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Thank you for the comment :-)

what a pinch and a dash are...I trust I'm allowed to print a copy from my own use!

On another subject...Winters in Wisconsin?
How does a former Seattleite abide that change in environment...my wife and I escape to Seattle as often as possible in winter.

Ditto on the print-out! Thanks for such a thorough list - I have collected some substitution ideas from different sources that I have scattered throughout a ton of cookbooks, but this list of yours is wonderful!
Great tips, great review!

... it's the oddest thing. I can figure all the diferent "strategies" out when I am baking but you make me the prime cook and all hell breaks loose in the kitchen. Ah, too bad woman can't live on cheesecake alone ... sigh. <:{

Great review, gonna have to print this one up so I'm not having to shuffle between cookbooks!
