I agree with the statement that R. A. Salvatore is the Stephen King of the fantasy world. Both authors always write books that are brilliant and powerful and this book is no exception to the rule.
I gave this book an 8+ out of 10.
Overview:
I wasn't as thrilled with the book in the beginning half as I was towards the ending. I think it was because I didn't read the first book in the series.
Even so if someone asked me to recommend one of Salvatore's books as an introduction to his writings I wouldn't pick this one. Not because it isn't good, it is and more, but because I know he has written better stuff.
One of Salvatore's greatest talents is describing a fight scene or a battle scene. He is better at this than anyone else I can think of. I think you get a better feel for the battle than you would if you were actually there to witness the whole thing.
If you have read any of Salvatore's other work and been pleased with it then you should be more than happy with this series too. All of his writings have a similar feel and quality about them.
The end fight scene with the fighter, thief, wizard, and paladin, vs. the demon is worth reading the whole book for in itself.
Don't worry about taking a chance with Luthien's Gamble it will pay off big in the end!
