bobnewman's Full Review: Ernest Hemingway - Green Hills of Africa
The first Hemingway book I read was Green Hills of Africa. This was Hemingway's second work of nonfiction, and I believe it to be one of his very best books.
In the 1930s, Hemingway found himself on a long safari in East Africa, which back in those days was still as wild as wild can get. The book is much more than just a tale of hunts made and game vanquished. It is Hemingway's obviously deep soul laid truly bare. You will hear his thoughts on many things and, shortly after you begin reading book, you will wonder how it all went so wrong that one day he decided that his only course of action was to take his own life.
While on safari, Hemingway finds himself in the company of some true characters, both black and white. The humor, insight, loves, hates, and worries of them all make the book so enjoyable that you don't want it to end. Whether doing battle with a wounded Cape buffalo or chasing a glorious sable or hunting birds for dinner, Hemingway shows why he was one of the greatest writers ever to take pencil in hand.
You need not be an Africa buff or hunter to enjoy this great book. In fact, if you have never read any Hemingway, you should start with this one.
