PMellEagle's Full Review: Robert B. Parker - Promised Land
This is one of Robert B. Parker's early Spenser novels. In it Spenser is hired to find the runaway wife of a businessman who, it turns out, has bigger problems than that!During his visit to the man's home, Spenser discovers Harvey Shepherd has a visitor... none other than the man known only as Hawk. (Remember this is an early "episode" of Spenser, they aren't "buddies" yet...)Hawk is the enforcer for a loan shark known as King Powers. Harvey denies he knows powers, but Spenser knows better. Hawk doesn't just drop by for a friendly visit...Finding Pam Shepherd proves relatively easy. Finding that she doesn't want to be found by her husband provides Spenser with a dilema. The book focuses on Spenser's fixing the problems of the family; hubby's been beaten up by Hawk and things look grim and wifey's gotten involved with bank robbers who killed a guard. How can Spenser fix all that? Read it and find out. It's an important chapter to the Spenser saga... and you'll see how he and Hawk came to be buddies too!Sidebar: One of the things I've always loved about the Spenser series is that there are no "throwaway" characters. If they're still alive, they might pop up in later stories... sometimes as a bit player, sometimes as a prominent character. Hawk became a prominent character...
