This book is a tradition in my family. See, I'm reading MY book to my 4 year old daughter. Yes, I said MY book, because its the book I had when I was younger. The book I read, and reread till it was dog eared. My daughter loves the story as much as I did and still do!
The book is about Fern, and her family, a pig named Wilbur and a spider named Charlotte. It begins when Fern's father is going out with a shotgun to get rid of the runt in the new litter of pigs. Fern is outraged and grabs the gun, begging her dad not to kill the poor thing. After all, its not the pig's fault for being small, and he didn't ask to be born! Her dad tried to explain to her how the other pigs wouldn't let him eat, so Fern begged her dad to let her feed him. So, thats what happened. Wilbur got a home, a name and a family that day.
Later, after Wilbur got bigger, and could no longer sleep in Fern's room, he was delegated to a dog house outside, then to her Uncle's farm. She was able to visit regularly. It seemed a satisfactory decision, and worked out well. Wilbur was happy with his new friends, the barnyard animals. He was happy, that is, till he found out that he was being fed well and fattened up for the kill. He was panic stricken, and ran around yelling and squealing when he heard this! He had to find a way to save himself! In comes Charlotte, to solve his newest dilemma!
Charlotte is a spider. She is a smart spider. Able to talk (of course in this story all the animals are able to talk) but also able to read, and she spins miricles with her webs. She writes words in the web, and Wilbur becomes famous overnight! He's "some terrific pig". Charlotte saves Wilbur's life. After all, a famous pig can't be sold at market for dinner!
In the end, Charlotte has a litter of little spiders, and dies a peaceful death. Its sad, but Wilbur has all her little ones to keep him company, and salve his hurts. All but four of the little spiders go off to live their own lives, and Wilbur lives out his days with the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren of Charlotte, never forgetting or replacing the marvelous spider who saved his life.
The book is wonderful. Its full of lively discussion between the animals, and they all come to life in a child's imagination. It is well written and wonderfully illustrated. Not only will your child love the book, but if you can pry it from their fingers, you may enjoy it also!
