A Tale of the Christianization of African Culture

Written: Feb 12 '00
Pros:Offers new point of view that provoke new ideas
Cons:no happy ending, it makes you face the truth

Chinua Achebe writes a convincing story of an African tribe that loses its battle against the Christian missionaries. She compelling describes the rich culture of African tribes and gives depth to their culture. Her writing makes the reader feel for the Africans and she makes it possible, through her knowledge of African culture, for one to truly understand the aspects of Africa such as polytheism. The book is written as third person limited view (the story teller does not disclose all information) as a witness in the tribe. She builds up the lives of many characters, mainly focusing on one brave warrior who can't compete with the "white man." This is a thought provoking tale and should be read by anyone who enjoys taking different points of view or favors a multicultural fiction.
