Bill Bryson writes ,not so much a travelogue,as a guide to those of us who have never been able to visit the States. He tells us numerous things about small town America and all the advantages it has over living in the U.K.Except to Bill these are not advantages, but to his wife and kids they are.
After living in England for two decades,Bill decides to return to the land of his birth, but his wife is English and so are his kids.He tells us of all the weird and wonderful things he finds a pleasure to get used to again, like giant pizzas and Bacon bits and he tells us of all the things he misses about England, like watching the Open University on television-in the U.K.-after the pubs close. He expounds on the crazy game shows on American t.v. and the annoying habit of every t.v.program being interrupted by commercials, every few minutes and that's a lot more frequently than in England.
The reader is given a reluctant though informative insight into life in the States and at times I personally could have packed my bags and jetted off to change places with Bill. He's not reluctant to tell all about the states, only reluctant to write the articles as he does not have a lot of time to himself.
Thanks a lot,Bill for a most enjoyable book and for whetting my appetite for a visit to the States.
