| starrchyld's Full Review: Saul, John |
John Saul's books, I'm sorry to say, are entertaining but mediocre. He fails to stray from the ever present class of ordinary horror writers, using predictable situations and characters. Though his stories are somewhat interesting, and usually have an unexpected twist at the end, they become redundant. Upon reading at least five of his novels, I have found that they are all too similar. They usually involve a child as the antagonist or protagonist, and it seems as if he uses the same five people throughout his stories, only giving them different names. The situations are stereotypical, as are the characters. I have found the same phrases (phrases that should be individual) repeated throughout his works. Saul is not entirely free of talent, I did like him enough to read many of his books, but he is lacking individuality and spontaneuity. His books are more appropriate for someone who wants light reading, or is not exactly a literary connisuer. Overall, sure, read a couple, but if you choose to have his books dominate your personal library, prepare to be disappointed.
