| Rocketgirl's Full Review: Dr Seuss, |
Want to see another side of Dr. Seuss? This fascinating little book is subtitled "early writings and cartoons by Dr. Seuss." It is compiled and edited by Richard Marschall. It is now somewhat rare but fairly easy to obtain through used book channels.
Theodore Giesel used to write cartoons and stories for humor magazines long before he wrote the Dr. Seuss books. This book is a selection of those cartoons and stories. This is not a book for kids, but its not because its contents are risque, violent, or anything else. Its because the humor in it is fairly sophisticated and most kids just wouldn't understand it. I'm not sure I understand some of it. Much of the humor is not the laugh out loud type, but more subtle.
One of his classic cartoons was titled "Quick Henry, the Flit." All of these hilarious cartoons have to do with the dreaded mosquito and destroying it with a squirt of "Flit." I had heard of the cartoon but had never seen it until I got this book. There are many other full-page cartoons in the book, many with the cartoonist's style that we're all used to, and many with those charming animals. A few examples of stories are: The Waiting Room at Dang-Dang, The Harassing of Habbakuk, How I Spied on General Grant in '61, The Clock Strikes 13, and many others.
The classic Dr. Seuss books such as Horton Hears a Who and Green Eggs and Ham are terrific of course. (Who remembers Bartholomew and the Oblek (did I spell that right?), one of my family's favorites?) But look at a different side of the creative genius of Theodore Giesel and read his "early stuff."
