On the cheap...

I am an avid reader and can go through books very quickly. Depending on how busy I am, I can go through one or more books a week and sometimes finish one in a day or two over the weekend.

Because of this, and the size of my paycheck, and the fact that I live in a city with an extremely high cost of living, there is one very important factor to me when I am book shopping: cheap!

I usually do my physical shopping in used bookstores, but when shopping in a used bookstore, it's very hit or miss. You have to rely on whatever selection they happen to have and oftentimes there are piles and piles of dusty books, not arranged in any order that you can determine, and it's hard to find something you really want.

Recently I discovered the website half.com. Half.com is an affiliate of Ebay now, but it is not an auction site. It is a web site where people can sell their used books, music or video games for whatever price they want, as long as it is half of the retail price or below. Once you register you can sell or purchase things yourself.

This is my ideal spot for buying books because I can find almost any book here for any price. they also have a "bargain bin" section you can browse through to find items that are extremely cheap. Also, since I accumulate books so quickly, and live in a small space, I can go through my own piles and sell off whatever I can live without to make some or all of the money back that I am spending and keep my house from overflowing.

The only downside is that it's not instant gratification. You first have to wait for the person you are purchasing from to approve the purchase, then they have one day to mail it to you, book rate, although you can request priority mail if you want. So you have to wait for your book to arrive and it is possible that it could take a while, although it hasn't taken long to get any of my books.
