I Wish Bill Clinton could run againDec 08 '00 Write an essay on this topic. If above words were crow I'd have a mouthful. But Bill Clinton just left my state, Nebraska. This was Clinton's first visit to the Cornhusker state since he was elected President. I can understand why the president was reluctant to visit as the state almost always rallies around the Republican presidential candidate. This year George W. received 68% of the vote. Neither candidate visited us during the campaign. (We only have five electoral votes. But Bill came to Nebraska as I guess he felt he should at least set foot on some Nebraska turf since it was the only state out of all 50 he hadn't visited. Although some wealthy Democrats gave a fund raiser for Hillary's senatorial race last spring and the first lady came and even bought some Christmas ornaments at a local jewelry store ( owned by Omaha billionaire, Warren Buffet. You can call him "Slick Willy", a womanizer, a liar and a crook, but he certainly can charm the people. Air Force One landed at Kearney, Ne this morning, December 8th. The temperature was in the 20's and the wind had the icy chill of winter. Hundreds of people lined the sides of the roads of the motorcade. The school children were among the crowds watching the cars turn onto the highway. Wearing a navy blue suit and a red tie, the President had his car stop and opened the door and went into the crowd shaking the hands of these elementary school children. You could see the amazement and wonder in the eyes of these moppets. Bill, Mr. President, you stood in the cold with no top coat and gave those children in a small Republican,Nebraska town the thrill of a life time. What a politician. Too bad neither of this years candidates would have even thought of leaving the warmth of the limousine. Neither of them thanked their supporters on the night of the cold and rainy election. Bill, you seem to really love the people. That rates pretty high marks in my book. Nebraskans held signs saying "You saved the best until last," refering to his avoidance of the state until now. Clinton picked right up on the good natured teasing, saying "Bob Kerrey, our Democratic U.S. Senator, told me I was going to a building that would hold all the Democrats in Nebraska," he joked motioning to the ceiling of the gymnasium at Kearney, which holds about 500 people. Complaining about the cold weather he said, "They told me it would be a cold day in...when I came to Nebraska. I might have been late but I'm glad I came." I think the president felt the hospitality and respect for his office that Nebraskans have for their country, no matter if they voted for him or not. Clinton rose in my estimation by paying real attention to his constituents. He could give the others lessons in charm. Nebraskans for all their aversion to Democratic presidents, they will elect Democrats to the senate as Bob Kerrey and our new Democratic senator, Ben Nelson prove. But, Bill, you seem like you're born to be president compared to the present presidential candidates, Frick and Frack, oh, I mean "W" and Al. |
