Mommy Will You Read Me A Book?Apr 28 '00 Write an essay on this topic. The way that I got my little girl to Love to read is starting early. I actually started reading to her while she was still in the womb. I did this as a form of affection not even realizing the seeds that I was sowing at the time. Once Saraiah was born, I took measures to make sure that reading was a part of our lives on a consistent and frequent basis. This is a timeline by age of how I developed her to love and learn to read. Birth – one I read to Saraiah almost nightly. I bought her a few black and white books that are supposed to be eye catchers for her. I always try to read in an expressive manner and love to hold her in my arms while I read. I am surprised at how much she stays focused to the book and pictures. Saraiah is 3 months old. I bought her many soft plastic books that make noises and such. She has a blast with these and they are quickly becoming her favorite toys. She has a Winnie the Pooh soft book that squeaks. I think I am reading this 3 times a day! At the age of 6 months, we are taking trips to out local library. Since it is just a few blocks away, I take her in her stroller. She always enjoys this. Once at the library, we sit in the children’s area and I read to her on the big cushions they have. We stay for a good hour or two. Saraiah really likes the time together and she enjoys seeing the other children in the library. 1-3 I continue to take Saraiah on a weekly trip to the library. Now that she is getting older, she is becoming much more involved. She is now picking out books and bringing them to me. She never knows what book she is choosing but I read it to her and she just sits and listens. She is very fascinated by the pictures as well as the expressive way that I read them. I get lots of giggles out of her now and I am glad that we have this time together. 3-4 Saraiah is still loving to read and learning to recognize pictures and words herself. She now pretends to read to me. She will pick up a book and start babbling away! We still take our trips to the library about twice a month. We are going to a new library now that has little puppets that you can play with. Saraiah picks a book for me to read and I have a puppet read to her. She loves this! Saraiah is in pre-school part-time. She is getting plenty of reading practice there as well. The teachers are frequently complimenting me on her ability to recognize words as will as her desire to read. Her teacher told me that she reads to a few of the toddlers on occasion. I am glad to see that she is really developing to be such a good reader. 4-5 (she is now 5 years old) Saraiah loves books and one of our most special times together is reading. She has memorized the “The Foot Book” by Dr. Suess. She literally knows this word for word, it is cute to see her just open the book and start reading the right words! I am really focusing on teaching her word recognition. This is my current technique a. I will point to a word such as Mom. b. I read the word Mom c. I find the word Mom again and ask her to identify the word d. 90% of the time she will know and she remembers it and reads it by herself! I decided to present this review, as a timeline to really stress that developing the love for reading in your child is an on-going process. When children are introduced to the amazing world of books, they will grow a love for them and be motivated to read and learn while reading. The other factor that I think is essential is spending time with your child while reading. Children will love to be plopped on your lap while you read. The more interactive that you make it – the more they enjoy it. Lastly – Motivate your child to learn to read by rewarding them each step of the way. Take the time to learn to teach your child to read and teach them that it can be a special time for the two if you. |
