| QueenLyssa's Full Review: Final Fantasy VIII: Official Strategy Guide |
Final Fantasy VIII is the best RPG I've played, but let's face it, it's a long game and it's got a lot of hidden surprises. You can play it without the Strategy Guide, but unless you waste a lot of time scouring the planet, you're going to miss a lot.
With the SG you'll know where to find all the GFs at their first availability and who to talk to to get valuable items. The walkthrough is indispensable if you want to get and keep a good SeeD ranking and get every item and magazine. The Item list and Card charts are also helpful since it's not always easy to tell what an item is going to do from the game's list and you don't want to waste or sell a rare item you may need later on. The maps are a bit difficult to follow in some places, but with some study and concentration they can help you find your way around.
Perhaps the only thing missing from the SG is ironically, strategy. Several important tips on how to play FF8, which puts some unexpected twists on previous Final Fantasy strategy, are missing, meaning you'll still want to go back and do a replay to get it right on a second game unless you can pick up these tips elsewhere. However, I'd recommend you get the SG for FF8 even if you're a purist. The game is long enough already, unless you're incredibly lucky or intuitive you'll miss GFs trying to figure it out on your own and lose out on a valuable part of the game.
