Enjoy listening? Not paying? Go to the library

As an avid reader my whole life, I have found that in the last few years it's taking me longer and longer to finish a book as I don't have much time to read during the day, so, I read only at night but, because I'm usually so tired by that time, I fall asleep after only reading a chapter or two. Needless to say, this can take quite a while to finish a book. By the time I'm finished, I can hardly remember the beginning.

So, when a friend of mine suggested that I listen to audio books I thought I'd take her suggestion and try them out. I was immediately hooked! Now, as I do my daily walk or drive from one place to another, I stick a tape into my cassette player and I'm taken away into a world of intrigue, mystery ,horror or romance, whatever the theme the book is, that I'm into at the moment.

These books can be quite expensive, so, I've also rediscovered the Library . I couldn't believe the selection when I first entered one after too many years away. Not only do they have all the classics, but you can get whatever best seller you might want,( as long as it's been put on tape,)just by requesting it, if it's not already on the shelf. I've discovered authors I've never read before, and I'm enjoying all my old favorites, listening to books I've already read years ago, but somehow, they seem newer and fresher this way, since I can listen to them faster than actually reading them, therefore I don't forget the beginning by the time I get to the end.

One tip though, I have found that the reader of these books can be very important in the enjoyment of the story. And, when I find a book narrated by the author, I find it even more enjoyable, as he or she reads it with every inflection and nuance, the way it was written in their minds. Stephen King and Bill Bryson come to mind when I think of my favorite narrator-authors. I just love the way they read their own creations.
A few times I've started books that I couldn't finish because the reader had such a droning voice that it practically drove me up the wall..But, all and all, I have found that to be the exemption rather than the rule. And, if they are from the library you don't feel that you are out all the money you would have been if you had purchased it.

Another little hint, if you can get the unabridged book rather than the abridged one, do so, I think it makes all the difference in the world. When they are abridged it seems to take all the mood and personality out of the story.

So, if you have a chance and have the time check out your local library, you'll be happy you did, especially if you are at all like me and spend a great deal of time walking or driving and get bored to tears from the monotony of it.

Happy reading or should I say listening!
