Note: this review is only about "The Mediterranean Caper". I wanted to review that book in particular but it is not in the system so I have to post my review here. This reflects only this one book, not the entire series, of which I am a big fan.
I like Cussler. I've read many of his books, and I can say with conviction that this one is a waste of time. One of the early Dirk Pitt novels, this one has a story that is uninteresting, not much in character development, and chauvinist undertones that are rather insulting to my modern tendency. Okay, so it was written in the seventies and thus has a different tone from what I'm use to. I don't care, Dirk is a bastard to women in this book, so much so that it detracts from the story. It's hard to really get into it when you keep balking at that latest insult Dirk has made toward the main female character. Overall the plot is dull, the characters offensive in their "cardboard cutout" way, the action is not as edgy as it could be, and mystery ultimately unsatisfying. Skip this one, read "Cyclops" instead.
