Thomas Covenant Series, Excellent

Apr 14 '00

I found that one of my favorite Science Fiction series has to be the Thomas Covenant series by Stephen R. Donaldson. There were actually two series of 3 books each. The main character is Thomas Covenant a man who would be voted least likely to do anything on earth or anywhere. He's not brave and he actually lives in a state of moral isolation being a leper. He is suddenly transported to "The Land" a place of magical potency that is also very beautiful and in big trouble.

Series One
Lord Foul's Bane

The opening to the story introduces you to our almost hero, Thomas Covenant, known as the unbeliever. There he meets the inhabitants of THE LAND including the immortal enemy Lord Foul the Despiser who has tried to lay waste to The Land including everything and everyone.

The Illearth War
Forty years have passed in The Land but only 4 days in the real world of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever. He is once again summoned to help protect The Land from the evil forces of Lord Foul. This is a confrontation of good vs. evil, and evil is winning. The Council of Lords and High Lord Elena (who turns out to be Covenants daughter from his first visit) is doing battle to preserve their way of life.

The Power that Preserves
On his third visit Lord Foul is winning still and Covenant must go to the Despiser's stronghold known as Foul's Creche with his friend Saltheart Foamfollower (great name). Covenant wants to save The Land so he must meet Load Foul in final combat.

Series Two
The Wounded Land

Nearly four thousand years have passed since his last calling to The Land. Load Foul is once again at work and is more determined than ever to destroy all.

The One Tree
Thomas Covenant sets sail to find the One Tree and to get a new Staff of Law to help the people protect their land from the evil that spreads over The Land. You can assume that the trip does not go well and becomes a test to will for Thomas and his friends, who he is trying not to let down.

White Gold Wielder
This is the final installment for Thomas Covenant and his last return to The Land. This last installment is where he must finally face Lord Foul, the Despiser, for one last time. But this time Covenant believes he has the answer.

Finally
I found these two series to be some of the best science fiction writing of all I have read. Stephen R. Donaldson is a great writer and the idea of a character such as Thomas Covenant was brilliant. If you have never read any of these books get one and settle back for a great time. Once you start you'll have to read all the books in both of the series. I actually read The Illearth War first and went back and read book one next, then read the rest in order. Enjoy!
