Jennifer Crusie, I'm Crazy for You!

Written: Apr 12 '00 (Updated Apr 12 '00)

Hey girlfriend! Are you looking for something to read at the beach while the kids build sandcastles? Are you about to spend extensive boring time in an airport and need a good diversion from the crowds of rude people? Are you suffering from PMS and just need to escape to a bubble bath and a good read? If your answer to any of these questions is yes, do get yourself a copy of Jennifer Crusies's book, "Crazy For You," now available in paperback.

I was given this book as a gift for my birthday. I saved it until I knew I would be traveling and would want something to read. It is definitely a book I would recommend to a friend. It's one of those that you just can't put down. You don't want the plane to land until you're finished...you know the type.

This witty story will keep you entertained from start to finish. Crusie has a marvelous way of introducing characters that come to life...some more than you'd like. The romance between the lead characters, Quinn and Nick, is powerful and full of a wonderful mix of humor and passion. And then there is Bill, her delusional old boyfriend who reminds me a bit too much of my ex-husband as he stalks her and continually denies the relationship is over.

Quinn is a 35 year old art teacher who is suddenly struck by the fact that her life is incredibly "beige" and boring. She's been living with Bill who is also a teacher and the baseball coach (dumb jock kind of a guy). Quinn doesn't realize how dull her life is until she takes in a stray dog which Bill refuses to let her keep. Suddenly Quinn begins to see things with new perspective and her life starts to spin out of control.

She keeps the dog but it routinely disappears mysteriously. She ends up having to break into the dogpound to retrieve her own pet and gets caught by the local police. Her new neighbor keeps an eagle eye on the place and reports all activities to the town gossips. Quinn's best friend moves in with her temporarily when her own marriage takes a roller coaster ride and Quinn's father also shares the house for a time when his wife tells secrets you wouldn't want to hear from your mother. Bill tries ineffectively to stay uninvolved but can't. It sounds complicated but Crusie's storytelling is delightful.

The characters are charming and surprisingly like the folks you knew growing up in your hometown. The story comes together with a warm dialogue and perfect touches of humor and passion...between girlfriends at the beauty shop, between parents who have secrets you'd rather not know about and between lovers...those you lust after and those you wish would just go away.

If you're looking for something to keep you up all night tonight or if you answered yes to any of my original questions, go out and buy this book! It's engaging and fun...and a little crazy....just like the title.
