Audio Books: A Fun AlternativeNov 10 '00 Write an essay on this topic.I am addicted to books. I have been since I was a small child and first learned to read, and my desire for the written word has not subsided as I have grown older. My book collection grows by leaps and bounds, something that frustrates my husband as I continually run out of room to put them. I attribute my love of writing to my love of reading, as the two go hand in hand. Audio books will never replace printed books, but they certainly have their place in the world of literature. Driving and reading is impossible to do at the same time, but it is simple and enjoyable to pop and audio book in the tape deck and enjoy a good story. A nice change from the regular radio fare! The biggest benefit to having an audio book is its portability. You can listen to it anywhere that you can carry a tape deck. While printed books are also quite portable, there are downsides that are not there with audio books. For example, I get car sick if I read in the car for too long a period of time. Listening to an audio book is a wonderful alternative for long car trips. Audio books tend to be more expensive than printed books, but I expect that the cost will go down as more of them become available. Even now the selection is good. Most book stores now carry audio books, and there is even an audio book club which I have recently joined. (The introductory offer was great, especially considering holidays and birthdays that are coming up.) Something that an audio book provides that a printed book doesn't is atmosphere. Maybe I am strange, but I often read passages of printed books that really strike me out loud, to enhance the flavor of what I am reading. With an audio book this is built-in. Audio books enable the listener to really participate in the story. Of course in order for this to happen the audio book needs to be narrated by someone with the ability to really put the tone and flavor into what he or she is reading. Some narrators are better than others. I would shy away from an audio book narrated by someone with a very strong accent different from your own, as you will be focusing more on the accent than the story itself. Give audio books a try! A good way to start out is to choose one of your favorite stories, one that you already know you enjoy. This way you will be able to focus on whether you like the theory of audio books or not because you won't have to concentrate too hard on what you are hearing. Another wonderful thing about audio books is that they make great gifts. Even if a person already owns a printed copy of the book, an audio book will enhance their collection as they can use it in different ways and different locations. Audio books are a fun alternative to printed books. They are appropriate for all ages, from very small children to adults. |
