I just CAN"T STRESS THIS ENOUGH! FIND THE TIMEApr 02 '00 Write an essay on this topic. If you have read many of my reviews you will know that one of my children has some developmental delays. He is also dyslexic. His form of dyslexia is a very rare one. I have spent a lot of time and money getting the diagnosis and the recommendations for treatment that he may someday overcome the worst part of this dyslexia. Currently I take Nick to a university about 50 miles away two or three times a week. The professor who sees him for tutoring is one of the best in his field and especially with the type of dyslexia that Nick has. I pay a very reasonable fee of $50 per session. The session lasts about an hour. Nick is also in Special Education at school for his reading. He is in the regular classroom most of the day but is pulled out for specialized reading classes. These classes are very unique for his individual needs and the lesson plans are overseen by the professor that sees him for tutoring. This I really feel good about. Now I must let you know that Nick is a really normal kid. He does everything on grade level except for reading. You may wonder how he does this! I have to read everything to him. If he has an assignment in Science; I must read the material to him. If he has a project in Geography; I must read the material to him. Math homework must be read as well. I spend a lot of time reading to him. You probably get the idea that I really know my 7th grade material. I REALLY do! I have purchased some books on tape as suggested for Nick so that he can read along with the printed book in front of him. These have been a blessing. I spend a lot of time reading to my son to help with his education. I will say that it is not a burden to me because I love to read. I really enjoy reading to my kids. I spent many hours of all three of my pregnancies reading and many, many more since then reading to them. I would not trade these hours for anything in the world. Now before anyone start feeling pity for Nick or myself for all of this time he requires, please DON'T! Nick is now in 7th grade and is reading on an early 6th grade level. He is also an "A" Honor Roll student. Our school takes into consideration the "differently abled" child and his weakness is not held against him. Pretty good for a child who one school labeled as "Mildly Retarded" at one time. Of course, my children no longer attend this school. I can't stress enough to parents of young children how important reading to your child is. It was a constant in my life when my children were young. I think that this set the precedence for ALL of my children to love reading and the intaking of information. Nick began doing something just after Christmas that made me believe that he would overcome this reading problem, he began being a reading volunteer in the kindergarten class in his school. Two afternoons a week, during his regularly scheduled free time, he goes to the kindergarten class and reads to the students. I cannot tell you how this made me feel when the principal told me of this. For a child who has reading problems to do this it took a lot of intestinal fortitude. He has improved so much though that he now has the confidence to share his love of books and knowledge with others. In my preschool class, I read at least one new book everyday. I also hold little contests that encourage the parents to read to their children. Of course everyone that participates gets a prize at the end of the contest. In the four years that I have been doing this, I have not yet had a parent who would not participate in this program with their child. I hope that I am helping another parent to develop a love of books and reading to their child. I hope that no parent ever has to go through what I am going through with Nick but if they are, maybe these little contests will help them to remember that they can find the time to do what is needed. |
