Ursula Hegi's "Stones from the River" is a startling, moving picture of post-WWII Germany and the life of a young dwarf, Trudi. From the moment you start the first page, Hegi's enchanting story pulls the reader in with the moving struggles and accomplishments of this child. You cry for Trudi, and struggle with her through her trials and differences.
Another title by Ursula Hegi is "Floating in My Mothers Palm", in which, Hegi goes further into the characters and gives you important background in a very unobtrusive way. Although it was written second, one might consider reading it first.
You grow up with Trudi in her small village after WWII, and Hegi does a marvelous job accurately showing the opinions and motives of the townspeople.
