For the Love of ReadingMar 03 '00 Write an essay on this topic.I like to think of reading as a gift. A gift that once given will never be forgotten. Introducing a child to reading allows them to realize the power of their imagination. As parents we can help our children enjoy reading by limiting the amount of time, not only that our children watch television, but that we do as well. It is unfair to say you have had enough television for today, when we as parents have had the tv on all day long. My 6 year old daughter when told that her hour for watching television was up said to me, "well yours is too, you have had the tv on all day while you cleaned." I was not happy with her response, but truth comes out of the mouths of babies. It is not only important for them to not see us being couch potatoes in front of the tv, but to see us reading. When a child sees their parent reading it fosters the idea that reading is a good thing. My children sees that it relaxes me, and that I liked to talk to them about what I am reading, or read my book to them. I have been to homes where there have been more videos than books around. I think think, no, it is a necessity for the child to not only see the care takers reading, but books in the home as well. Books that they can pick up and enjoy the pictures. Having books in the home is very helpful to those children learning how to read or those who are on summer vacation so that they do not loose any of their abilities. A parent can also make going to the library a fun time. My kids know that when we go to the library we are going to be out all day. We go out for lunch-pizza, swimming at the YMCA, and then accross the street to the library. Once at the library, as a rule, they have to pick out at least 2 books before they are allowed to play or use the computer. I try to have them think about what they want to read about. We sit on the floor and leaf through the books until we find something they are interested in. Some of our favorites include: The Napping House, books by Audrey Wood, Roberet Munsch, the Dinofaurs Series, Eric carle, or Frank Asch. Reading is one constant in my house right along with love, respect, honesty, and family |
