This is book two of a trilogy written by Terry Brooks. This book Knight of the Word takes over 5 years later. Nest Freemark, the young girl that battled a demon in her neighborhood park, is now in college at Northwestern.
Nest is an accomplished runner, competing in long distance cross country races. And, she is a top notch athlete. Nest is expected to represent the United States at the Olympics in the coming years. Nest has basically put the past, her life in the small town of Hopewell, IL. behind her, and she's become a terrific success.
John Ross, the Knight that assisted Nest in defeating the demon 5 years earlier, has begun questioning his faith and his purpose in the battle. He has continued on his journey as a Knight of the Word, and suddenly has been faced with a series of troubling question: What good am I doing? What good is what I have done? Would it make any difference if I weren't a Knight?
Nest, not having thought much about the incident that took place 5 years ago, has been contacted by the Lady to assist a Knight in need. She's been called upon to save John Ross from slipping out of the service of the Word, and falling into service with the Void.
Nest feels obliged to help John Ross, after all, he came to assist her when she needed someone to guide her. She figures that it will be a short journey, go visit an old friend, let him know the danger that he faces, and be done with it.
But, the turn of events and the problems she encounters are unbelievable. This is just supposed to be a simple visit. Now, she is finding that things are happening that are bringing back all of those old memories of her fight against the demon years ago. It's making Nest question how far she should go to help. This isn't her problem, is it? If John chooses to no longer be a Knight of the Word, that's his choice, right?
Nest is feeling very uneasy about the choices that she is making. She has done what was asked of her. But, did she really help John Ross by visiting? Should she stay and help John Ross through this?
To find out if Nest saves John Ross from turning to the dark side, you will need to read this book. It's a wonderfully written book, and a terrific follow up to Terry Brooks' first book of the trilogy Running with the Demon. The final book, Angle Fire East is the last book of the trilogy. I cannot wait to get into this book, as these two have been so wonderful. Enjoy this book. It's a terrific book, and it's not too far-fetched to make it completely unbelievable.
