There are believed to be 7 main energy points in our bodies, called chakras, which stem from Hindu literature. However other cultures have had beliefs in energy points such as these, from the Chinese to the Hopi Indians. Blockages of energy in these chakras can cause emotional distress and illness.
Anodea Judith explains the chakra system in exquisite detail. I can only say that it far exceeds any other book on chakras that I have ever seen in about 15 years of reading books in this genre. Most books give a brief overview. Ms. Judith fills her book with "everything you ever wanted to know", and everything you would never think to ask.
Anodea takes each chakra separately. Each chapter includes:
-- a meditation associated with that chakra
-- physical exercises for strengthening that chakra
-- articles which discuss various aspects of the chakra
-- charts which cover folklore and historical correspondences
In addition Ms. Judith draws upon other schools of thought such as Yoga and Accupressure and shows how all of these systems can work together in bringing your body to wholeness and health.
By the time you have completed this book you will have an extensive working knowledge of chakras, their place in history, their place in folklore and how to integrate this system into your daily life simply and easily. You will learn how imbalances in your chakras can cause illness, can cause relationship trouble, and how to overcome these troubles by strengthening your spirit by way of your chakras.
You will learn how to open your heart, reinforce your will, and to be open to the messages of spirit all around you. You will learn what colors and scents may stimulate your chakras.
My only complaint with the book is its mood. It tends toward being textbooky. I am a person who can easily sit down and read a 400 page book cover to cover in a day if it pulls me in. This book never puled me in that way. It was dry and occasionally even boring. But as a reference book it is one of my favorites.
In closing, this is THE reference book on chakras. Whether you've never heard of chakras before now or if you've been working with them for years you will find something of interest within it's 400+ pages.
