Bill Bryson, another great reason to listen

Mar 08 '00

Listening to a Bill Bryson book is like hitching a ride with him on his journeys, as he retraces his steps through Europe in " Neither Here nor There",traipsing through England in "Notes From A Small Island" and going back to America, after living away for twenty years,in "A Stranger here Myself"

These are the three books I've recently listened to on Audio.I especially love to hear a book that the author narrates himself , to feel what he wants me to feel with every tone and inflection of his voice.

"Neither Here Nor There" is about his journey through Europe, twenty years after he made the same trip as a young man during the seventies, comparing the two and the way everything had changed, but in it's own way, stayed the same. From the frozen lands of Scandinavia to the craziness of Istanbul, with stops along the way in some of the most beautiful and historic places on the continent. His insights can be truly hilarious and heartwarming.

"I'm A Stranger Here Myself" is a hysterically funny tale of his return to America after living in Great Britain for two decades, the changes he discovers after being away for so long. From frozen, microwaveable foods, the latest in kitchen appliances, the incredible variety in supermarkets, to the downfall of drive-in theaters. Reacquainting himself with life in America,it's inhabitants, and all the quirky aspects of life in the country of his birth, can just leave you breathless with laughter.

In "Notes From A Small Island he takes a tour of the land he has made his home for those last twenty years. From the Southwestern coastal resorts to the Northern reachs of Scotland, with stops everywhere in between, discovering what it is about this country that he has come to love so much. The tiny villages with strange funny names, the old Churches, twisty country lanes, the people, their politeness, tea and crumpets, even foggy cold winter evenings, all of it. Just wanting to remember it all, imprinting it on his mind, before his return to America with his English wife and their four children.

These are wonderful travel essays, and especially enjoyable to listen to the author in his own words describe the why's and wherefore's of his love for travel and the discovery of places thousands of miles away or just around the corner.
