| julie42's Full Review: Adams, Douglas |
This article is only about the number 42 and how it was "derived" ... If you feel I'm in error, and misread Douglas Adams intentions, please let me know. I have read the three other epinions on Douglas Adams and felt the number 42 could be explained in more detail.
FORTY-TWO.
Douglas Adams creates this big machine to calculate the answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything. He intends to get the answer of every meaning and the answer of why anything and everything exists. The computer works for years, millions, possibly billions, in fact, and finally the answer is about to come out! What's the answer? 42. This is unbelievable. We then find out that the machine is actually Earth, and that is the answer that Earth comes up with. So, he makes or programs the machine to calculate the question to the answer they now have. In the process, Earth is about to be demolished to create a super highway through the solar system. Minutes before the question is written down by the computer, the Earth is demolished, so we still don't know the question to Life, the Universe, and Everything. (Just as it sounds, even though it is a title in his series.)
However, in case you wanted to know the answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything, it's 42.
Some places the number 42 has shown up in recently:
There have been an awful lot of 42's around. Every time I see the number 42, I say "42!" ... A lot of producers, directors, etc, put it into movies, I think it's because they are Douglas Adams fans and/or realize that people like the number and know what it means. It shows up more than any other number, I've realized.
The X-Files.
It's strange that Mulder is the "believer" of odd things, and Scully is the skeptic. Mulder's room number is five, and Scully's room number is Forty Two!
Mystery Alaska, the movie.
I just watched this movie the other night, and one of the main player's number is 42, as well as the ref.
A few tidbits about the Douglas Adams.
Born on March 11, 1952.
First novel: Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
