Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness is a "must read" for all ages. Conrad's descriptive journey up the river is a metaphor for man's technological progress, for his conquering of nature in the name of civilization. Although written in the early 1900's, its message can be used to examine the current deforestation and civilization of the rain forests. The author's style is conversational and reflective, yet intellectual. The book is not a quick read because of the author's use of symbolism and elevated language. It is a masterpiece in the style of "The Jungle" and "1984" because of its affect on society and on the reader. Readers whom enjoy "Heart of Darkness" will also enjoy "Lord Jim," by Conrad.
