I admit it freely; I hate to pay full price for anything . I also admit freely that I love to read. You will rarely find me without a book in close proximity. When I leave the house it goes in my purse or the diaper bag. When I'm at home it's usually in the same room I am.
I read about a book a day (prior to my Epinions.com addiction that is). I really dislike going to the library. It ends up costing me much more than if I were to go out and buy the book myself. I forget to return them :(. I know that's awful; which is why I don't go to the library.
I like to be able to keep the book or make notations in the margins. You cannot do this on library books. You should not do this on library books.
Those are the main reasons I purchase my books at the Salvation Army Thrift Store . The money I spend there goes for a good cause; helping my community. The price can't be beat and the selection, for me anyway, is perfect!
I'm fortunate in that the people that donate books to the particular shop I go to seem to have very similar tastes in books. I often find ones there that I have at home and ones that are on my list of books to read.
If you are a regular at a place like this the workers will get to know you; know your preferences and alert you to the new books. If you are really lucky (and I am) they will give you first pick of the boxes in the back room.
Garage sales are another great place to get books inexpensively. In Minnesota at a garage sale the going rate for a book is $.25 or 5 for a $1.00. The same rate as the thrift store.
Don't discount Family and Friends when searching for new books. With friends chances are you share some similar interests right? So wouldn't it be a safe assumption that you might like the same authors? Why not ask them what they are reading and if it's something you are interested in ask to borrow it when they are done. My father-in-law and I read a lot of the same books and used to check with each other (a few years ago when we were both reading more than we are now) what current books we bought; then passed them back and forth.
If you have some local thrift shops check out the book sections. What can it hurt?
Happy reading!
