Before reading this I didn't like Batman. I thought the storyline was pretty lame and that Batman himself was a boring and hokey character. But then came my winter vacation, and as I looked through my mom's boyfriend's bookshelves, this book caught my eye for some reason (Frank Miller's name to be exact.)
Nevertheless, I opened it and as most comic fans do, I looked through the artwork real quick. It had this real natural flow to the drawings, the pages all laid out in an eye-pleasing manner, and a generally 'cool' feeling to it.
Intrigued by both the artwork, and Frank Miller's part in it, I began reading. Within five minutes I was hooked. Here was a superhero that I'd never liked, in a story that I absolutely could not stop reading.
What makes this story so great (warning, gives away some of the plot):
1. It takes place after Batman's retired and given up on the city. Chaos is everywhere, and a gang known as the mutants is taking over, and Batman is little more than an urban legend.
2. Just as the city is reaching its peak, Bruce Wayne decides that he's had enough ... and that's when it starts to get good. No longer is he in for justice and the american way, he's in to punish those who have wronged others.
3. I'm not going to ruin it for you. Just know that this is THE comic book to read if you haven't read it. Trust me, no matter who you are, batman enthusiast or not, this book has the story and illustrations to grab any reader.
