Good but Tempermental

Written: Jan 07 '01
Pros:Mature product, well-documented
Cons:less flexible than competitive products

It's not cutting edge, but it works and it's the market-leader for the foreseeable future.

I have used this product for nearly a year for a home-based service business with a strong internet presence. I purchased this product because it was the market leading software and I figured that it would have most or all of the necessary features, and that the help and support would be well-developed.

I have tried several hosted online products (Bizfinity and Netledger) and while each of those products has strong points, I have always maintained my QB accounts as my core accounting.

WHat I like about it:

1) Accounts Payable is best I've seen and has many nice touches, like auto fill in of AP fields speed up most of the basic accounts payable tasks.

2) There are lots of wizards, which many people like. I like only one of them -- the one for balancing credit cards based on statements.

3) Import/export is supported with many online and offline services. This is undoubtedly b/c QB is the market leader -- but regardless of the reason, most any service you'd like to integrate will be available in a usable format. For example, you may want to sign up for online bill payment with Paytrust or Checkfree. SImilarly, you may want to download your credit card or banking activity. It can be a pain, but you can usually make it work.

What I don't like:

1) Accounts receivable is rudimentary (but functional). If you need extensive customizability, and/or the ability to streamline the matching of payments with invoices QB is a bit slow.

2) Online integration is poor. If you go with a supported partner for payroll, bill payment, banking, the integration is pretty good. However, if you are happy with, say, your existing bank, Intuit can spend more time trying to sell you its own banking services than solving your problems.

3) Support for anything beyond basic functionality is pretty poor. If I'm paying $179/year for support (the going rate for QB premier support) I expect something more than someone who reads from a knowledgebase application.
