YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!!
by vicwang | Oct 17 '00
When it comes to PC's, "conventional wisdom" is everywhere. Unfortunately, a lot of it is 100% false, and this article explains why.

Mobo's (Reply to this comment)
by big_guy571
I have found it is MUCH easier to deal with aftermarket mobo's than the OEM stuff.
I find aftermarket mobo's computer guru "friendly"
Easy to change settings, everything is costom configurable through the BIOS options unlike OEM stuff.

I like that little trap you set - it should net a few of those members who have rigged the "HIT" mechanism to crank up the counts. Some members boast about using automatic rating systems. These tend to have one thing in common: A line counting function - these arbitrators use certain criteria that will reject a short review. Also, there is some evidence that certain rating ring members lock onto their peer's ratings and follow suit like electronic sheep.

Great work - I hope you do not burn out!

"this looks way too familiar, like something i nr'd a month or so ago..."

Heh, yeah that's exactly the "effect" I was looking for. By the way, what do you think about the three anonymous NR's so far? I'm thinking one of three things:

1) They just went straight to the end after reading the first few paragraphs and rated NR

2) They thought this was another "illiterate write-off" of some kind and rated NR

3) Something in the article "struck a nerve" (maybe they themselves wrote something like the "intro" as one of their reviews!)

"As far as upgrading you can upgrade any pc to a 1ghz 256meg power beast for around or under $500 right now. God it's a good time to love computers. =)"

No kidding. If you're willing to overclock, you could even get a Duron 600 for $40 and overclock it to ~1 ghz, get 256 megs of PC133 SDRAM for around $90, and then get an A7V motherboard for around $150. Man, to think that you can get that kind of power for less than $300 is just insane :-).

Re: "Proprietary" is over used but... (Reply to this comment)

Worst propriatary hardware I have seen were those hard-drives used by gateway. The connectors were completely different which made switching out hard-drives impossible unless you used the Gateway hard-drive.

Last time I saw them was in '98 so I don't know if they are still using them.

As usual Great Review

"When I think of or use the word proprietary, I am thinking of devices like older Compaq motherboards that could not be replaced with aftermarket parts. The older Compaq motherboards are neither AT or ATX and will not fit in any other case, nor can you place any other motherboard in one of these Compaq cases."

Thanks Gr8ful (and Cnelzie, who also mentioned proprietary cases and motherboards a while back). Since I realize I made no mention of these exceptions in the original review, I've updated the review accordingly.

Thanks,

"Proprietary" is over used but... (Reply to this comment)

When I think of or use the word proprietary, I am thinking of devices like older Compaq motherboards that could not be replaced with aftermarket parts. The older Compaq motherboards are neither AT or ATX and will not fit in any other case, nor can you place any other motherboard in one of these Compaq cases.

I also think of designs like the old IBM 32-bit ISA slots that you can't find cards for anymore.

Just a penny for your thoughts,
Gr8ful :-)

Re: Just as a test... (Reply to this comment)
by mskills
My motive? Just plain ol' morbid curiosity...really! I've read several editorials in the last three months that have attempted to test the rating methods of Epinions' members against various hypotheses. Suffice it to say, the results have always proved to be amusing, unpredictable, and skewed just enough to be considered moot in proving these hypotheses. Since you labelled this review as "The WORST Computer Epinion Ever Written", I just had to give it the credit that it was due (the WORST rating ever awarded!) Because of your prompt reply, I chose to move my rating to its intended position ahead of schedule. After all, it takes a lot of nerve to NR a review that has been HR'd by over 50 other members! I certainly don't need to make myself look like an a...er, I mean anarchist any longer than necessary!

"Just as a test to see if you read your comments, I'm going to NR your editorial for now. In exactly a week from now, I will come back and change it to an HR. Let's see how this works... :)"

Well how about if I do one better, and respond before even receiving my email alert for your comment? :-) Of course, I'm rather curious as to your motive for doing so. Now if only those other three anonymous NR'ers would change their ratings too...

I caught this from your profile page, and thought you would be linking to someone else's review. When your own picture came up, I thought "Well maybe he is commenting on one of his early reviews and how bad it was." I was suckered in all the way up to your "real review" where I caught on to what you were doing.

An excellent way to warn readers away from following conventional wisdom, which isn't always so wise.

I look forward to reading more of your work.

Just one little thing about proprietary... (Reply to this comment)
by cnelzie
I agree with you on the part about some bizarro sound card, but the most troublesome proprietary part would be both the case and the mainboard. This occurs often when a Daughter board is involved. The case itself might be in great shape, but you will never get an off the shelf board to work in the case unless you spend some serious money to modify the case. At that point it is cheaper to buy a new case and board.

That's all. The opinion is very awesome despite that little thing.

Re: I thought you had lost your mind (Reply to this comment)

Heh.. great to hear that my little "ruse" has worked! I'm actually rather curious how many people bought into the joke, and how many had it figured out before getting to the "real" review. It's a good thing you have to scroll all the way to the bottom to issue a rating, or else I might have garnered a few "NR's" already :-).

And thanks for the "e.g. tip"... I'm familiar with the term, although I tend to use "ex." for readers who might not know what "e.g." means. Kind of like how everyone pronouces "forte" as "fort-ay", even though it's technically pronounced "fort". I'll still say "fort-ay" even though it's wrong, since if I pronounce it properly everyone's like "What are you talking about?"

I thought you had lost your mind (Reply to this comment)
by puter
Since I had already read several of your other reviews, I couldn't believe that you would write such a short and awful opinion.

What's more, I thought you had brainwashed all the people who had given you an "HR" rating. It seemed to me that the opinion should have permanently ruined your reputation as a reliable source of information.

Until I glanced at my scrollbar and realized you had played a trick, I was mad that I couldn't find the opinion rating box to give you a big fat "NR" and write a scathing comment about the opinion. (It's a good thing they put that box at the end instead of the beginning, huh?)

Thanks for another nicely written opinion.
- puter

P.S. I do have one minor suggestion. Instead of using "ex." to indicate that you are going to list an example, you could use "e.g.," which stands for "exempli gratia" in Latin. Translated to English, it means "for example." You would normally follow the "e.g." with a comma, just as you would if you used "for example" instead.
