Napster paved the way for multimedia sharing programs. It was the first to allow this unique method of sharing files, and it still remains the best in its field. This should not be credited to having great features or an intuitive GUI, but simply to being around the longest. Because of this, Napster has had the longest time to gain users, remove bugs, receive media attention, etc.
With the search database, one can specify exactly how he or she wants to get songs; searching by bitrate, frequency, line speed, and ping time is all possible. In addition to this easy-to-use search database, Napster also features a basic in-house Mp3 player with support for playlists, continuous play, and random mode. It has multi-channel chat forums, an instant messaging system, and a "Hot List," where one can add other users on Napster to see when they are online. The transfer windows are easy to understand and read; one window for downloading files, and one window for files which are being downloaded from you, the user.
The biggest drawback to Napster is that it features multiple servers which are not linked together. This means that there may be ten or even twenty different servers online, all containing different files. While there may be millions upon millions of songs available, they are not all accessible at the same time. Finding the song you want could become tedious, even though it might be readily available. In addition, while Napster also allows the user to customize the program's colors, it still can't be skinned like one of its major competitors, iMesh.
