Good Deals with DellJul 01 '00 Write an essay on this topic. After 6 months of research, I decided to buy my new computer from Dell. Here are the reasons why: Great Reliability and Support Dell's computers aren't lemons. According to people I know and a survey of thousands of PC World Magazine readers, Dell has the lowest number of computers which have problems. In fact, Dell was the only company rated as "Outstanding" in this area. Even Micron and Gateway only were listed as "Fair". You might not think that this is so important but imagine if your new computer came and you found that it was DOA (dead on arrival) or some part didn't work. It's a real hassle, and it happens a lot with computers. Think about it- computers aren't simple electronic devices. There are a million things that can go wrong, such as incompatibilities with software or hardware. And since these days everyone can customize their computers, you want to be assured that the company you order has done a lot of testing with different configurations. Support is also important. If you have a problem, you want to talk to people who know what they are talking about, or at least people who care about your problem is. Computer support people are somewhat notorious for being badly trained, incompetent, or rude and unhelpful. However, Dell was also rated "Outstanding" in this area by PC World readers. From my experiences also, I have found the people to be very friendly and helpful. Also what really amazed me was the short wait time. You don't have to wait 45 minutes while they put you on hold- my call was answered almost right away. Excellent performance Dell manages to provide good components in all areas. Their systems tend to be stable and fast, often outperforming all the competition on the PC World charts. You can get some really high quality components such as a 64MB DDR NVidia GeForce2 GTS graphics card for amazing 3d graphics, fast Rambus memory for quicker performance and multitasking, great harman/kardon speakers, a fast 8x/4x/32x CD-RW drive, a 12X DVD-ROM drive with hardware encoding... And the price tends to be comparable to Micron or Gateway, even considering the performance edge and superior support and reliability. The only thing I can complain about is Dell's decision to back Rambus (RDRAM). Although this kind of memory is fast, it is also very overpriced, in my opinion. This means that if you buy a computer, you are basically forced to have 128MB of RAM because 256MB is too expensive. If you only want 128MB, Dell's systems still turn out to be comparably priced to systems from other companies with cheaper PC133 SDRAM or even really cheap PC100 SDRAM, which is quite impressive. So those are just my 2 reasons for buying from Dell. I think that's all the reasons you need. If you can get a good system for an affordable price, from a good company, there's not much more you can ask for. You could buy from Micron or Quantex, but even if you can find a slightly cheaper deal with them, I still recommend Dell because of the difference in support and reliability. |
