| zKevin's Full Review: 3dfx Voodoo5 5500 AGP |
The Voodoo 5 5500 AGP is the next stage in 3d graphics! It can handle Half-Life at resolutions such as 1600x1200 and get frame rates up in the 30's! It's just downright incredible! Here are some of the technical specs:
*64 megs of ram - for most people, this is more ram then you have on your computer! (And if you think this is alot, just wait on the Voodoo 5 6000 AGP! That has 128 megs of ram! Sweet Jesus!) What does this mean? It means that the card will virtually never lag, and it has tons of space to compute all the processes.
*Real-time full-scene hardware anti-aliasing - This is what truly sets this card apart. What is anti-aliasing, you ask? Well, you know the jagged edges you see in all 3d computer games? This completly removes them! It sort of blurs whats on the screen a tiny bit and makes everything look super realistic!
*Support for Direct X, OpenGL, and Glide - This means that if you like OpenGL more then Direct X, or a certain game runs faster in it, it can switch to OpenGL!
*DVD assist - This thing even helps out DVDs so you always get 30 frames per second and never drop a frame again!
*Support for "many" operating systems - This card supports Windows 95 and Windows 98... This is what I consider the card's major downside. Personally, I'm running Windows 2000, so I guess I won't be using one of these. And this is the reason the card gets only 4 stars.
With all of the above in mind, if you have a 4 or 8 or even 16 meg card in your computer, you might want to get this, but I suggest waiting on the Voodoo 5 6000 AGP which will have 128 megs of ram. Why? Simply because you won't need another card for a long, long time. Expect the 6000 AGP out in a few months, max.
