I have been using AT&T for years (at least 3, maybe more), and was surprised to see negative reviews. The only time I've ever had a problem getting on or being kicked-off was about two years ago when they were upgrading the San Antonio facility. Even that only lasted a week or so. Since then service has been better than ever.
I consistently log on with 48.8 connection and cannot remember ever being disconnected.
Their customer support is good, sometimes you have to 'hold' till a technician is available but it's not long and it's an 800 number. It the beginning, setting up the software sometimes took customer supports assistance, they were always friendly and accommodating. Now, if you use Window's Internet Connection Wizard, there's nothing to the set-up. All you do is dial-in, choose a local phone number (many areas have several) and let them download the setting to your computer.
They have several pricing plans depending on your usage. You can also get discounted long distance if you combine your bills.
When I first started, they only offered one email address per account. But that's been changed and you can now get more.
As with most ISPs, you get your standard 'free web space'. They have an easy to use upload program that makes managing you site a 'nothing', even to a novice like me.
I've often considered using a local or regional provider but I like the idea when I travel, I can almost always find a local number to log-in and at least check my e-mail.
There are two negatives I've found. One, there username and passwords are impossible. Even if you write them down, chances are it will take more than one try to get it right. I strongly recommend selecting the 'remember password' box. Second, if you live in the middle of nowhere and have to use an 800 number for access, this will get expensive. You'd probably be better with a local provider.
