What attracted me to the P1000 initially, was the quality of the prints, (2400X1200dpi) the built-in card reader capable of taking type 1 & 11 flash cards, the 8meg memory buffer, and the sheer quietness of the machine when printing.
My scanner has usually been plugged into my PC and then the printer has been plugged into the scanner. The P1000 didn't seem to like this set-up. This may have caused the printer to quit receiving information from the PC right in the middle of a print job about every fifth print. (This is why I'm writing a revised review of the P1000.) (I might buy a USB cable for the printer although I've heard that this is buggy too.) I need my parallel port for my scanner.
It's been reported often enough that the printer drivers on the CD don't work with Win98. I found this to be true and downloaded the latest drivers off the net. HP should have included effective drivers on the CD as they have caused many buyers of this great printer many headaches for nothing.
I've used the P1000 to print 8"x10" prints directly from the flash card. They came out dark. This can be remedied by selecting a brighter setting using the "tools" button on the front of the printer. The tools button can also be used to change the paper size, page layout and paper quality.
My old printer (Epson 600) kept giving me "out of memory" warnings. The P1000 has given me no memory problems.
The software which saves the prints from a flash card placed in the printer works well, as does the photo editing package supplied. My very best photo printed on the P1000 to date, was of my daughter using the CCD RAW mode from a Canon PowerShot pro70. This is uncompressed data, unlike a jpeg and yields beautiful high resolution prints.
The most difficult thing about writing a review of the P1000 is that the machine produces great prints and would get 9 out of 10, but the printer drivers on the CD would get "0".
