The next step up

My brother and I now have two computers, one of which has a 400 MB drive. The other has a 6 GB drive. Guess which one has the CR-RW. Since the average CD can hold 640 MB of information, it's not really worth it to put the burner on a computer with a small hard drive; you need a really good computer for it.

I believe ours is 8x/2x/2x, which means it reads at 8x, burns a writable CD at 2x, and burns a rewritable CD at 2x, as well. The only reason we got one so slow is that when we were buying it, drives were a little more expensive than they are now. Ours can burn audio CDs, so a 74-minute CD (one that's 36 seconds shy of full capacity) takes 39 minuts to burn. (That's 37 minutes for the tracks and 2 minutes for the table of contents.)

There are some out there that burn at 48x or higher. I'd recommend holding off on one of those unless either you are really impatient or you usually find yourself having to burn several dozen CDs on short notice.

I'd like something around 8x, mostly because I don't really need a lot of speed, but also partly because all the CDs I have are meant for 1x-8x. When buying a CD-R or CDRW drive, you should look at the cost of CD-Rs and/or CD-RWs. If you notice that CDs capable of handling great speed are really costly, maybe you want to save some money and go for a slower drive. the 1x-8x CD-Rs I buy usually go for a dollar apiece or less, depending on the rebate I can get. (If you know where to shop, you can occasionally get them for free.)

CD-RWs go for $10 apiece, but I rarely use those. Mostly, I use CDs to store information; occasionally, I will burn a CD to take with me to school or something. If I lose the CD, I'm only out $1. While I'm on the subject, if you are looking to burn audio CDs on CR-RWs, make sure that the audio system you are using can handle them. Most of the newer ones can handle it, mut many older ones can't. Bear this in mind before you buy a hundred-pack of CD-RWs.

That being said, you'll have to ask the store's staff about a CD-RW's compatability with your system; I don't know much about that. Just try not to break the bank on this purchase.
