Usability of the Optiquest V95 19" Monitor
Written: Sep 20 '99 (Updated Sep 20 '99)
Pros:small footprint, very reasonable price, easy to adjust
Cons:not meant for business use (much better for home use)
Note: Optiquest is a Viewsonic company.
I recently bought a new computer and decided to get a good 19" monitor. I chose the Optiquest V95 for several reasons. It is only slightly larger and heavier than the better 17" monitors, so the footprint is reasonable. This is important since I don't have a lot of room. Also, it delivers excellent picture quality, for a very reasonable price. Third, it received several good reviews in other places that I checked around the web.
Setting up the monitor is a piece of cake. The on-screen menus are generally clear and easy to use. But, you do have to play around with the buttons on the front to figure out exactly what to do. However, once you get the hang of one control, the rest are easy to understand. It'll take you only a minute or two to get the monitor configured just as you want it. It is a piece of cake.
Here is a list of adjustable features:
1) brightness
2) contrast
3) position
4) size
5) pin cushion
6) pin balance
7) trapezoid
8) parallelogram
9) tilt
10) zoom
11) color temperature
12) moiré removal
Note: You really don't have to tweak the monitor settings too much. The default settings are actually quite good.
At high refresh rates and resolutions, edges do blur a bit. But, that is to be expected for a monitor in this price range. Also, I should point out that you probably won't ever notice any differences unless you are looking at high quality images with sharp edges, and while you have both the refresh rate and resolution cranked.
Another minor complaint is that I do see a mild halo around bright white objects on a completely black background, but this only happens once in a great while. It takes considerable effort to make the monitor perform poorly.
Thankfully, I never notice any flicker and I am pretty sensitive to it.
