This is the age old computer question isn't it? Just how much room do I need on a hard drive? Well here's my view on choosing a hard drive to go with a new PC.
First you need to know what you'll be doing on your computer. If you plan to buy a lot of games or programs, you need a large hard drive. How large? Well take into consideration that most new games take anywhere from 200 megabytes-1 gigabyte. Sometimes more. And many art programs take at least 300 megabytes. If you're a big gamer are plan to use lots of programs, estimate 400 megabytes per program and then leave yourself with 1 gigabyte left over. So if you plan on getting lots of programs then you'll want at least 6 gigabytes. That's pretty much the standard size.
Now if you plan to use your hard drive for office use with lots of documents, you won't need so much. After you get past any office software you're documents will barely take up any room. Estimate the use of 800 megabytes for software and less than 1 gigabyte for a years worth of documents. so you'll only need 3-4 gigabytes.
Those are extreme cases though. Most people use a mix of both. Now if you want to use lots of programs, create plenty of documents, and download some internet files, you'll need a medium size hard drive. Yes, a medium size. 10-12 gigabytes should be enough.
Now if you're using your computer for something other than personal or office use, say for programming, web design, computer art, etc; you might need a large hard drive. Anywhere from 16 megabytes and up should be effective.
I've owned my computer for about a year and it's a 13 gigabyte hard drive. I had expected to need that much. After my basic programs (Windows, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Office), a couple of games, some internet files, and a few scattered programs I'm only using 4 gigabytes. I hope that's a good explanation.
