The best overall PDA (comparisons with PalmV inside)

Written: Sep 17 '00
Pros:Great value, very expandable
Cons:Batteries, durability

Ah......I can't describe the emotions that went through me as I opened the box and touched my Visor for the first time. I've used both Palm and Handspring devices, and I firmly believe this is the best one yet.

---PRO'S---

*Affordable - The Visor deluxe costs a mere $149, whereas the PalmVx costs a whopping $400 and both offer pretty much the same options (see the PalmV-Visor comparisons below)

*Software support - Since the Visor Deluxe uses a PalmOS, you can download thousands of games, apps, etc. from various sites. (I recommend Kyle's Quest)

*Colorful options - Choose from 5 neat color. (I chose Ice)

*Ultra fast hot-synching - The Visor Deluxe uses a USB port which is much faster than Palm's serial cable.

*Springboard - I'm not quite as excited as most other people are about this feature because I'm not really looking forward to shelling out more money to make my PDA into a remote. I guess it's neither a pro nor a con for me, but it's probably a good thing for most other people.

---CON'S---

*Batteries - I prefer the lithium-ion rechargeable battery from the PalmV rather than the AAA batteries with the Visor. I would rather charge my PDA every night, than buy batteries every month. (even though I've had it for over a month, I haven't had to replace my batteries yet
but I feel nervous when I'm near empty and I don't have access to batteries.)

---COMPARISONS---

+ Memory - The PalmVx and the Visor Deluxe both have the same amount of memory(8mb), but the Visor Deluxe costs $150 cheaper. Winner: Visor(cheaper)

+ Software support - Since both run on PalmOS, there is the same software support for both so that's not a problem. Winner: Visor (cheaper)

+ Design - In my opinion, The PalmVx has a better-looking design than the Visor, but that shouldn't matter....should it? Winner: Palm

+ Expandability - The winner again is the Visor because of the Springboard. The Palm has Flash memory, but you can only do so much with Flash memory. Winner: Visor

+ Durability - Some scratches seem to be showing up on my Visor, but there were none on my PalmVx. Winner: Palm

+ Overall - The key factors in this issue are price and value. You get a far better value by purchasing a Visor Deluxe for $150 cheaper than the PalmVx and both have pretty much the same stats. Winner: Visor
