This is a pretty well done game. I was a huge fan of the original, playing it for many many hours. During the years that followed, many sequels to other Sid Meier games were released, and I knew it was only a matter of time before a Railroad Tycoon sequel came out.
I've played both the 1st II and second century, and I consider the engine to be very well done. Games are fun to play, and there are multiple ways to play: infrastructure building (tracks, stations, trains), earning company money, growing a personal fortune, taking over the competition (or driving them out of business), and going for 'speed' related goals.
I highly recommend this to games who like simulation/empire building games. I think the only weakness is that the scenarios are sometimes frustrating, or in need of improvement, but otherwise it is a very solid product.
The definitive best railroad game out there (hahaha, that's an easy feat, but it is a great game!)
