A friend who was using this service recommended it to me when we were talking about faxing. At the time, I was paying about $14 a month to use jfax.com (owner of fax4free) for premium features. I was only infrequently using the fax services - and mostly for receiving. Paying that extra $14 a month seemed like a pain.
So, I tried fax4free. The sign up process was a little confusing, because it routed you into two different sections depending on whether you were using the service for business or for personal (I was using it for both, and wasn't sure which way to go ... or whether I could use personal for business or vise versa), but once you got through that initial decision, the remainder of the sign up was fairly quick.
The service itself is great! I've noticed with other free fax services that people frequently complain about the length of time it takes to receive faxes sent to them. No problems for fax4free! I had a friend send me a test fax and I got it within a few minutes.
Other pluses:
- Easy to use web-based interface for sending faxes.
- FREE faxing to all areas of the US and low rates to other countries.
Now the downsides (yes..there are a few):
- You don't get to choose your own fax #. Which means that if you're in California, you may well wind up with a number in New York.
- No drivers to send directly from your word processing program. This was a pain for me coming from the premium jfax service where this was a feature.. but most people will find the web interface intuitive and easy enough to use that they'll never even miss this.
Overall ... this service is great. After trying it for less than a week, I canceled my jfax service to use this one instead.
