| thelonegunman's Full Review: Acer Aspire 2192 |
As a DoD domain administrator, and owner of a computer service company, I am used to the problems associated with systems ranging from the 8088 to PIIIs, and Basic to NT and 2000Beta3 RC3.
Never in all my years have I seen as clumsy a marketing blunder as Acer's 2192R "Annie" model. With nothing but the USB mouse and keyboard, Windows "safe" mode is a nightmare, and the '98 USB default config. is befuddled and incomplete.
Seeing that they failed miserably by putting out a model with Windows environ. only input devices, Acer refuses to answer any email pertaining to the "Annie" models. The company website lacks any documentation on the systems, save a bogus comparison to units from HP, Compaq and Apple (falsely stating online documentation exists), and a hazey jumper diagram.
We bought 3 such systems, relying (regrettably) on Acer's hype, and cannot sell any of them for the constant USB problems.
The units' size and form factor would make them ideal for confined spaces--IF! they worked.
I noticed bus keyboard and mouse connectors behind the rear backplate, and innocently inquired of Acer as to the chance of a jumper/BIOS config. to enable the ports, only to be told that Acer no longer supports the "Annies", and that any documentation existing on the units was available online (there is none).
We are seriously considering dismantling the units for the individual components, due to Acer's non-support of the series.
I can assure Acer that those 3 units will be the last pieces of ACER hardware to pass our company's shipping door.
