When I went speaker shopping and checked out all
the different brands I was amazed at the fantastic
sound you could buy for $50 or less. The big
difference from the older systems available is
that most newer speakers include a relatively
small subwoofer. The difference is unbelievable.
It can be hard to hear a difference when shopping
in a large open store, but you will hear it in a
small room.
The Altec ACS33 comes with two 'tweeters' and one
subwoofer with it's own power source. The sub is
the size of a small shoebox and will really throw
out the bass if placed on the floor in a corner or
against a wall. It will really make the floor
shake. The tweeters, though small, deliver crisp
high end.
The separate volume control is located on a
control dial on one of the tweeters. It takes
a bit of getting used to but works well with no
popping or buzzing. I barely turn on the volume
at all and get lots of thick low-end. It can be
so loud that you might want to use a graphic EQ
to turn it down (most media players have tone
settings you can tweak).
Installation is very simple with no software to
install, I just plugged them in and booted up.
Speakers may be the easiest thing to upgrade on a
computer. If you are still using speakers without
a subwoofer, you will be amazed at the difference.
The Altec ACS33 delivers great sound for very
little cash.
